Last night at Merge

We covered the most important topic we can cover and that’s the Gospel!! We looked at some common things that make people think they are saved. Things like: coming to church, being baptized, being a good person (not kicking puppies), and others. While these are all good things, they will not get us bring us salvation. Our sin is to big to simply reconcile with church attendance or anything else we can try and do. It’s only by the blood of Jesus that our debt is totally paid for. Because He was fully God and fully man, he was able to live a sinless life. Because of His sinless life, His death on the cross has the ability to cover our sin and save us.

I think in church world we can get to accustom to hearing about Christ and His sacrifice for our sin, so it begins to not carry as much weight. We need to consistently remind ourselves how were-dead in sin, enemies of God, without hope, subject to God’s wrath-this is what we are rescued from. We move to alive in Christ, sons/daughters of God, hope (not only is this world, but the next), God’s wrath has been poured out on Christ.

We broke down what the word “gospel” means which is good news and then asked the question why is this good news? The fact that I was once spiritually dead and am now alive is the best news!! This changes everything. Dead things can do nothing, but anything is possible when you’re alive!!

Here are the main points and scripture from last night. Follow the links, read the verses and have a conversation with your son/daughter, friend/team mate, co-worker.

1) The Problem: Sin (Genesis 3:6)

2) Because of sin we deserve God’s wrath… (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:3)

3) …But God sent Jesus to take our punishment for sin… (2 Corinthians 5:19-21, Ephesians 2:4-5)

4) …He died in our place and for our benefit

My biggest takeaway: I was once God’s enemy, but through Christ He views me as His son.

We also showed this video help sum the night up in a different way:
