As of the time of me writing this, Dnow has been over for 1 week. Even before the weekend was over, I started thinking about how I was going to recap the weekend. Part of the issue was that the weekend flew by!! It’s one of those crazy things where you work and work and put a ton of effort into the weekend and you try to take a few minutes and enjoy the plan coming together. During those brief minutes, I tried to being processing where we were at in the weekend. Since I had a week to fully decompress, I’ll attempt to recap all that was Dnow 2013.
This may come as no surprise, but our theme this year was ONE. There are tons of great curriculum that are suited for Dnows, but the more we looked and thought about where we should go for this year, nothing felt right. So after much time and thought we decided to write our own Bible studies. We knew it was going to be a lot of work, but it the end, we were writing for OUR students. We know what our students have been studying all semester in YBF, Crave, and Merge. So because of all this we knew how best to write for our students.
So after looking at several different options and Scripture passages we felt like Ephesians 4 was the right fit for our students. This passage sets up the as Christians we having something that unifies us all and that’s Christ. And because of Him in us we are to be unified.
For the 1st Bible study we looked at Ephesians 4:1-16.
We answered a series of discussion questions based on these verses and fleshed out these 3 main points.
1) Unity is only possible if we exhibit the right ATTITUDES.
2) Unity is only possible through the power of the GOSPEL.
3) It is impossible to grow in MATURITY when separated from community.
The second Bible study came out of Ephesians 4:17-24
For this Bible study we broke down the qualities of someone who’s heart has been changed by the Gospel and someone’s who has not. One the main things we wanted to talk about was that we cannot change ourselves. The true life change that Paul is describing here can only come from Christ.
We also broke down the things that we put off as believers and the things we should put on. We wanted this Bible study to be very practical and made every effort to make it very easy to apply.
Our third Bible study came from Ephesians 4:25-5:2
This Bible study came at a great time in the weekend. The way our schedule works is we have a Bible study in the morning, some large group free time, a challenge for each grade to complete, then the third Bible study. So this last Bible study continued right where #2 left off.
We went back to the outline form for this last Bible study and here are the main points:
1) DISHONESTY destroys relationships.
2) When allowed the time to grow, ANGER can destroy any relationship.
3) Our WORDS are either at work building up or destroying our relationships.
We wanted our students to be mindful that we are ONE in Christ. That we are a unit and as a unit we work better together.
Our speaker for the weekend, Jay Hardwick, did a great job of communicating that Jesus is the only one who can satisfy the deepest need of our souls. That was His mission. Everything else He wants to do in our lives is based on this truth.
His passages for Friday was John 6:25-35 and Isaiah 55:1-2
His main point was summed up in Jesus+Nothing=Everything
On Saturday night, he connected that fact that we need to be in community with other believers. That we are better together. And that when we do community right, not only do we become more like Christ, but our community represents Christ.
His main point for Saturday night was God uses relationships to grow your faith.
His Scripture passage was from Romans 12:9-13
These times of worship greatly added to what God was doing through-out the entire weekend.
I’m so thankful for all the God did this year at DNow!! Several people have been saying it was the best year ever. While I haven’t been around for them all, I can say this was the best one I’ve been a part of!!
